The Value Of A Hub

Recently, my friend, Vern, wrote a humorous piece on the evolution of Hubpages from it's lowly beginnings in a Berkeley garage into the household name it is becoming. His hub got me thinking about the true value of Hubpages and our hubs..

No, I am not referring to the monetary value of a hub or Hubpages, although I am quite certain that the creators of Hubpages never regret the decision to build their empire on their way to the bank. What I refer to is the human value of Hubpages.

This place has created a community for so many of us. We join together in each others personal experiences and recognize emotions and feelings in each others writing, running the full gamut from love to hatred, pain to bliss. We comfort each other in grief and congratulate each other in moments of triumph. In short, Hubbers have become a sort of family dynamic where people of all sorts are welcome, simply because they belong here just as much as the next person.

I recently discovered another place where Hubpages can be very valuable. As some of you may know, my uncle Harry passed away December 19,2009. To say the least, my family life is a little strange so I have lost contact with many of my relatives over the years. I spent a few days tracking down clues about my uncles death on Google to find out what had happened and I wanted to pay my respects so I posted his obituary and my thoughts in the hub, Another Marine Was Lost. In a couple of days, I had received a comment from a woman who had lived with my uncle for 15 years and loved him dearly. Through her, I found out that I also have two cousins I did not know about.

I'm proud to say that my hub is the only place on the Internet with a corrected obituary for my uncle that lists all of his children. That is part of the value of Hubpages. It brings light into areas of darkness. It allows us to find out things about ourselves that we did not know. It gives us the opportunity to set the wrongs of the world right again.

As I close this hub, I would like to take a moment to thank the creators of Hubpages for this wonderful community and ask you, the reader, to remember the value of your hubs.
